Average wind speed each year

Figure 43 - Average wind speed (in knots) each year for three Scottish stations - Lerwick, Tiree and Leuchars (values estimated from Turnhouse before 1969) from 1957 to 2004, with smoothed curves showing a running average.

Regional trends

  • The graphs for both Tiree and Leuchars show a trend of decreasing average wind speeds in the last forty years.
  • Lerwick has seen a trend of increasing wind speeds over the same period.

Future trends

  • Estimating changes in average wind speed in the future is very difficult. In the High emissions scenario the UKCIP02 report suggests a change of less than 7% for the 2080s.
  • You should treat the values with caution given the uncertainties in estimating future wind speeds.
